This was a good video that takes a realistic perspective to what it’s like being an artist and addresses a problem I have with art motivation videos. I found that art motivation videos, consistently (implicitly or explicitly) put the blame onto the individual for not practicing hard enough and honing their skills. I acknowledge some people don’t have good discipline, which plays some part, but I don’t think the way these videos emphasize putting the blame on aspiring professional artists to be helpful. I have not heard one art motivation video mention the economy, having to work a shitty job that takes up all your energy, or even acknowledge this financial reality. Like your video mentions, working a minimum wage job, retail, customer service, etc. isn’t fun and saps you of all your energy. It’s not a discipline issue if the mode to survive in this world requires you to work a wage job that breaks you down physically and mentally. Not to mention that CNBC reports that 62% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and 70% say they feel financially insecure… So if this is the world we live in, why are these aspiring artists to blame rather than the Capitalist system that perpetuates the value of profits over art and affordable living? Your last section in your video is such a nice touch and steers people into a great direction after hearing the ways Capitalism has ruined art. If only these art channels can utilize their audience properly and compel them to vote in local elections and participate in their nations politics to make the world a better place for artists. Like if we lived in world where there was no Gerrymandering, no conservative politicians advocating to cut social spending and cut good public programs , and taxed the rich, maybe the arts can flourish and we can all make art that brings us joy. Additionally, I like how you mentioned that people shouldn’t stop wanting to be artist despite all these things you covered. It adds empathy and more reason imo to take what you’re saying more seriously because you aren’t trying to sell me your art tutorial, art mentorship, etc.
